Qi Gong is an ancient Chinese health cultivation system combining physical postures, breathing techniques and focused attention.

Qi Gong concentrates on developing healing energy through control of breathing and simple movements and postures. The methods show how you can learn to ignite your own Qi energy. Qi Gong exercises vary in length and complexity, are often short, simple and easy to learn, though there are many complex methods and forms like the beautiful ‘Wudang Shen Quan Qi Gong’ an ancient Taoist system from the Song dynasty in China.

The word Qi Gong is made up of two Chinese words. Qi is pronounced chee and is usually translated to mean the life force or vital-energy that flows through all things in the universe. The second word, Gong, pronounced gung, means accomplishment, or skill that is cultivated through steady practice. Together, Qi Gong means cultivating energy. It is a system practiced for health maintenance, healing and increasing vitality.

All Qi Gong styles involve a posture (whether moving or stationary), breathing techniques, and mental focus. Practices vary from the very gentle and subtle (for health, wellbeing and healing), to the vigorous and demanding (for the athlete and martial artist). Qi Gong creates an awareness of and influences dimensions of our being that are not part of traditional exercise programmes. Most main stream exercises do not involve the meridian system used in acupuncture nor do they emphasise the importance of adding mind intent and breathing techniques to physical movements. When these dimensions are added, as is the case with all Qi Gong practice, the benefits increase exponentially.

The postures and movements of Qi Gong reduce stress, build stamina, increase vitality, and enhance the immune system. Regular practice has been found to improve cardiovascular, respiratory, circulatory, lymphatic and digestive functions. Those who maintain a consistent practice of Qi Gong find that it helps one regain a youthful vitality and vigour, maintain health into old age and helps maintain optimum functioning of the major organs along with the muscular and skeletal systems.
